Transitioning to Expression Web? Get the Latest Resources!

Ok... FrontPage holdouts and Notepad converts, at last, you have moved to Microsoft Expression
Web! Now what do you do?

When you open Expression Web, it looks like the FrontPage interface, however, behind the scenes there are some significant differences that you need to learn about.

Make your first stop theMicrosoft Expression on-line community site and checkout the great articles and video for Web developers that are transitioning from FrontPage to Expression Web: Expression Web for FrontPage Users.Corrie Haffly is the author of many of the articles and she has done an excellent job of helping former FrontPage users learn the ways of Expression Web. I particularly like Corrie's Transitioning to CSS tutorial. The CSS Properties task pane and the Manage Styles task pane are tools that will be new to FrontPage users and they are core elements in building and editing "tableless" CSS page layouts.

Another article I found very helpful is Adding Support for Page Includes in Expression Web byPat Geary . FrontPage users found the Insert Web > Included Content function very useful and unfortunately it is not available on the Expression Web Menu Bar. However, Pat shows you how to easily customize the tool menu to add the Insert > Include Page command to the Tool Bar.

After you have reviewed the articles for transitioning FrontPage users at the Microsoft Expression Community Site take a tour of the following links. I think you find Expression Web a huge step up in performance and capability from FrontPage.

Hosting:
Microsoft editors continue to work best with Microsoft web servers and while you can use Expression Web and Visual Web Editor Express to FTP your files to Apache Web Server on UNIX/Linux. You will not be getting all of the extended functionality available on Windows Server and the Windows IIS Web server. An example of a good Windows Host is Hostway: http://www.hostway.com .

A Must Have:
The best CSS Tool you will find and it is a free plug-in for FireFox- You
need this:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1843

Don’t have FireFox?
Get it here: http://www.mozilla.com
Use FireFox to “Preview in Browser” and you will have fewer problems viewing local webs ( Internet Explorer has problems viewing local content).
Note: Because of the Microsoft security patches you may still need to publish your Web to a Web Server to acurately see your changes.
